CENTRO DE ESTUDIOS HERRERIANOS (CESHER)

The Centro de Estudios Herrerianos has been created by the Town Hall of San Lorenzo de El Escorial in a desire to contribute to consolidating this Royal Site as a tourist destination, by appreciating the value of its historical and cultural heritage.

The Centre is based in the Antiguo Cuartel de Voluntarios (Former Volunteer Barracks), a municipally-owned building located at number 3 of the street calle Pozas in San Lorenzo de El Escorial.

The Centre has been formed as a cultural entity devoted to the study, teaching and research of Herreran-style architecture. The building contains a Herreran-Style Museum and a Documentation Centre for Herreran-Style Architecture and is also, in accordance with its foundational purposes, a publisher of publications and a promoter and organiser of academic activities relating to specialised teaching, doctorate courses and postgraduate studies.

As a part of the Tourism Excellence Programme, the facades have been cleaned and the interior of the building has been demolished, while the ground floor has been renovated.

At the current time, renovation work is going on in the rest of the building.
