The Sierra of Guadarrama dominates and characterises a landscape where the principal natural elements, the Mount Abantos and La Herrería, are excellently conserved, thanks to their classification as sites of great beauty in 1961.
La Herrería. It alternates areas of Pyrenean oak forest with meadows in which ash and oak trees live in harmony. A path offering information panels, the several granite fountains and the rest areas provided grant the opportunity of enjoying one of the best-conserved natural areas in the Madrid region.
Silla de Felipe II (Chair of Felipe II). This historic place is found within La Herrería, and has to be considered a must for visitors. Man-made steps hewn out of the enormous rock by picks lead to the platform from where Felipe II watched the development of the work on the Monastery. Here the visitor can contemplate a magnificent panoramic view of the historic and artistic heart of San Lorenzo de El Escorial against the backdrop of Mount Abantos.
Alto de Abantos (Abantos Peak). At 1,752 m., forming part of the GR-10 route, it represents one of the most emblematic places of the Madrid mountain region. The steepness of its slopes and the reforestation carried out in the past create a diversity of environments and contrasts that make it the ideal place for mountain-lovers.
Travesía de las Cumbres Escurialenses (Crossing of the Escorial Peaks). A tradition that began over 25 years ago, it is one of the most entertaining sporting events of the region. In a carefree and festive environment, more than 1,000 participants meet to climb up the Abantos mountain during the festival of San Lorenzo.
Centro de Recusros Naturales (Natural Resources Centre). Created inside a restored traditional mountain building, it contains an Environmental Education Centre which promotes the values of the Sierra of Guadarrama and aims to raise environmental awareness.
Arboreto Luis Ceballos (Luis Ceballos Arboretum). Located on Mount Abantos, here you can get to know the area’s ecosystems, traditional forest practices and the relationships between the mountain range and its surroundings. A marked itinerary of just 2.2 km allows access for hikers. You can also consult its web page.
